MIAMI — Families and law enforcement officers from across Miami-Dade County gathered Thursday night at a memorial ceremony honoring South Florida officers who died in the line of duty.

The ceremony recognized 171 officers whose names are etched on the memorial wall after making the ultimate sacrifice.

This year, two more names were added: David Cajuso and Devin Jaramillo.

Both officers died last fall.

Cajuso, a motorman for Miami Beach Police Department, lost control of his motorcycle on Interstate 75 near Hialeah while on his way to work.

Jaramillo, a deputy with the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, was shot and killed while responding to a minor traffic crash. Investigators said the suspect attacked the deputy and killed him with his own service weapon.

During the ceremony, Cajuso’s widow, Eileen Cajuso, spoke about her grief while remembering the man she once stood beside at the same event.

“Back then I stood here as his wife watching him. Today I stand here as his widow,” she said. “I’ve stood on the edge looking in. And now I’m on the inside living it.”

Jaramillo’s parents and siblings also attended the ceremony and spoke about the deputy.

“Policing is more than a career,” said Devin’s father, David Jaramillo. “It was a life calling for him. He followed in my footsteps even though thats not what i wanted. He carried himself with dedication and compassion.”
