According to Hollywood police, officers spotted a suspect they were looking for, but when they tried to approach him, he fled.

Police said the suspect fled south on A1A before crashing his vehicle in the area of Hollandale Beach Boulevard and A1A, where he was taken into custody.

Witnesses told Local 10 News the suspect was driving a black car on A1A around 7 p.m. with several police cars following close behind.

“All of a sudden, I saw the cop cars on the horizon chasing, then I saw who they were chasing, this black car,” witness Chris Coletti said.

Witnesses said the driver then tried turning onto Hallandale Beach Boulevard while going the wrong direction.

“He made the turn going probably over 50 miles an hour, and the car didn’t turn,” Coletti said. “It jumped over the median and hit those cars.”

After the crash, witnesses said the driver jumped out of the car and ran into a nearby apartment building before being taken into custody.

Despite the damage, witnesses said the people inside the other two cars appeared to be OK.

“Everyone walked away, everyone,” Coletti said. “Even the car that was landed on top of.”

Police confirmed that no injuries were reported.

The suspect’s identity has not yet been released.
