MIAMI — An arrest report obtained Monday by Local 10 News outlines the accusations against a Miami-Dade County Public Schools teacher who was arrested last week.
According to the report, Leroy Wright Jr., 46, of Miami, was arrested Friday on charges of offenses against students by authority figures, unlawful sexual activity with a minor and depiction of obscene material involving a minor.
Police said the principal of Miami Jackson Senior High School was emailed by someone on April 28, who told her that Wright, a reading teacher at the school, was “having a relationship” with a student.
The principal eventually submitted a “personnel investigative model report” to the M-DCPS Office of Professional Standards last Thursday and the report was then submitted to the Miami-Dade Schools Police Department, the report stated.
According to the report, police interviewed the person who emailed the principal on Thursday and that person identified the victim to them.
Police said they then interviewed the victim at his home, in the presence of his mother, and the student told them that he first met Wright at the beginning of the school year when Wright approached him and asked him to join the Freshman Club, which he was the adult sponsor for.
Police said the student joined the club.
According to the report, the victim claimed that the first sexual incident occurred on April 29 when he hugged his teacher as he was exiting Wright’s classroom.
Police said the student claimed that Wright hugged him back and then kissed him for about 6 minutes while groping him.
Wright also kissed the student on May 1 and groped him that day and while driving him home on May 4, authorities said.
According to the report, Wright waived his Miranda rights and provided some kind of admission, although his exact statement to detectives was redacted from the publicly released report.
Police said Wright was informed prior to his arrest that the victim’s cellphone had been “forensically examined.”
He was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center Friday and remained there Monday morning without bond.
The school district released a statement over the weekend, confirming Wright would be fired.
“The type of behavior this individual is accused of will not be tolerated, as it runs contrary to the professional conduct we expect from all employees,” the statement read. “The District has initiated employment termination proceedings and will ensure the individual is precluded from seeking future employment with the District. At M-DCPS, the safety and well-being of all students remain our top priority.”
