MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A 24-year-old man accused of multiple break-ins at a Miami-Dade home and using the homeowner’s gun during a later entry while stealing nearly $14,000 in property was arrested Tuesday, authorities said.
According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, Alejandro Orozco was taken into custody after deputies located him near Southwest 74th Avenue and Southwest 22nd Street.
Investigators said the case began Saturday when the victim returned to his home in the 1800 block of Southwest 73rd Court around 3 p.m. and found Orozco, who is listed as homeless in his arrest report, asleep on the living room couch.
The report states that Orozco was holding a gun belonging to the victim that had been taken from a bedroom inside the home.
The homeowner grabbed the gun in an attempt to disarm the suspect and avoid an accident, investigators said, prompting a struggle before Orozco fled the home.
Authorities said Orozco returned the following day by climbing through a rear window.
Once inside, they said he allegedly stole shoes, clothing, jewelry, watches, a wallet, ammunition and the victim’s electric bike before fleeing. Deputies estimated the total value of the stolen property at $13,900.
Investigators said surveillance video later captured Orozco inside the home again around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday after he entered through the same rear window, which did not lock.
They said he appeared to notice a camera inside the home and fled without taking anything.
Deputies located Orozco later Tuesday morning and said he was found with some of the victim’s stolen property in his possession.
According to investigators, Orozco made a confession that was redacted from the publicly released arrest report.
Jail records show Orozco is facing two counts of burglary of an occupied structure and one count each of armed burglary and third-degree grand theft.
As of Wednesday, he was being held without bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
