MARGATE, Fla. — A 19-year-old Venezuelan migrant was arrested in Hillsborough County and extradited to Broward County to face charges after a shooting earlier this month that terrorized a shopping plaza, records showed.
Detectives accused Joan Ferrer of pulling out a gun and firing and injuring a man — despite the presence of a 10-year-old child — on May 9 in Margate, according to an arrest warrant issued on May 10.
The shooting, which also damaged several storefronts, was at a shopping plaza along South State Road 7, between Southwest Second Court and Aztec Boulevard, according to Maj. Michael Druzbik, a spokesman for the Margate Police Department.
Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Ferrer on May 15, and corrections booked him at the Broward County Main Jail, where he remained on Tuesday, in Fort Lauderdale, without bond, according to inmate records.
Ferrer, who was born in Maracaibo and lived in Tampa, also has a hold from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to court and inmate records.
Ferrer faced four charges: Attempted murder, child neglect with bodily harm, criminal mischief, and discharging a firearm in public.
Broward County Circuit Judge Francis I. Viamontes was set to preside over the case.
