WASHINGTON — Hateful and antisemitic voicemails are being directed at Jared Moskowitz, with some messages threatening violence against Jewish people, including the congressman and his family.
At first, one of the calls sounds almost forgettable.
“You’re a laugh and a joke,” a caller said in a voicemail.
The kind of call many people would likely delete and move on from.
But then the messages grow darker, with hate pouring through the speaker word by word.
“You’re not a (bleep) American at all -- you’re the Hitler -- heil Hitler -- that’s what you are,” the same caller said.
Other messages called for violence against Jewish people, including the congressman.
“Well, if it’s more civilian deaths, well, if it’s Israel civilians yeah sure... how about 9-million of them, trains are boarding to Germany charters available upon request,” one voicemail said.
Moskowitz admitted he is concerned for the safety of his family. He noted children are involved, not just political heavyweights in Washington.
The Florida chapter of the Anti-Defamation League told Local 10 News that this kind of hate speech can lead to violence and is not always careless or reckless conversation.
Sometimes a voice is just a voice. Other times, a voice sounds like trouble before trouble arrives.
Moskowitz said 24-hour-a-day security is what he needs to help keep an eye on his family.
Capitol Police are investigating.
