MIAMI — Miami police arrested a 21-year-old man they said pepper-sprayed a bystander who chased him down on Thursday after he stole pricey pieces of jewelry from women.
Despite being pepper-sprayed, police said the Good Samaritan was able to tackle the suspect, identified as Yagiz Dogan.
Investigators said he first swindled a woman on July 18. Police said a woman met with Dogan in front of the Chase Bank at 1450 Brickell Ave. to sell him a $15,000 diamond ring after messaging on Facebook Marketplace.
Police said she let Dogan, who lives in a condo building a few blocks south, hold the ring and certificate and he ran off.
On Thursday, cops said he struck again but did not get away.
This time, they said Dogan “approached” another woman in the area of the same bank branch “attempting to buy her two bracelets.”
When she handed them over to let him see them, police said he ran off and the victim yelled for help.
The bystander joined the chase and caught up with Dogan, who sprayed him with pepper-spray, an arrest report states.
But the victim wasn’t deterred and managed to tackle him, police said.
Officers took Dogan into custody on grand theft and battery charges. In court on Friday, a judge set his bond at $11,000.
