CARACAS, Venezuela — The U.S. Embassy in Venezuela is delivering much-needed equipment and supplies to a community still trying to recover from the deadly earthquakes in June as a shutdown airport continues to affect the local economy.

John Barrett, the U.S. representative in Venezuela, calling the 20 excavators provided to the country, along with other equipment, highly sophisticated with the ability to be operated remotely.

It’s all part of an effort to clean up the rubble left behind after the earthquakes and to restart the battered economy of the coastal region.

Nearly 30,000 people in the area make their living by working in imports, according to the local customs’ brokers association.

The majority of them had little work up until the recent reopening of the main port.

Venezuela’s main international airport is also located there, and it remains closed.

They are both of vital importance for the economic well-being of the entire region, with the ripple effects being felt throughout the economy.
