NORTH MIAMI, Fla. — Newly-released body camera footage shows North Miami police officers encountering two young children who authorities said were locked out of their home by their parents.
The incident happened on Wednesday near Northeast Seventh Avenue and Northeast 132nd Street, according to their arrest report from the North Miami Police Department.
Police said an officer responded to the intersection at just before 6:30 p.m. after a Miami-Dade County Public Schools officer spotted the two children, 7-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy, running down the street alone.
According to police, the children had gotten hungry and were trying to get food at a nearby Publix store after their mothers, LaToya Garland, 40, and Mikequisha Gordan, 36, forced them outside to play and locked them out.
Authorities said after repeated knocks at the door, they were concerned that the women were having a medical emergency and got a building employee to let them in the apartment.
There, police said they found Garland and Gordan unconscious on a sofa in the living room, appearing to be impaired.
The two were arrested on charges of child abuse with no great bodily harm. The Florida Department of Children and Families is now involved.
