MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — New body camera footage sheds light on what happened when a Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputy shot and killed a teenager while attempting to serve a search warrant in Miami Beach.
It happened just before 7 a.m. on July 24 at 785 81st St. in the Biscayne Point section of North Beach.
Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz released footage from two of the cameras deputies were wearing.
The video shows what is called a Special Response Team busting down the door. Once inside, they start shouting at a woman to raise her hands.
A moment later, 17-year-old Durrell Young swings his door open with a gun in his right hand and moves toward the room deputies are in.
The entire interaction happens very quickly.
The Sheriff’s Office says the deputy told Young to put up his hands, but he did not comply, so the deputy shot him.
Authorities released a photo of the gun they said Young was armed with.
The Sheriff’s Office says Young and another man named on the warrant, 18-year-old Valentino Berry, were known to deputies due to previous gun-related offenses.
Berry was taken into custody. Young was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is still investigating this shooting.
