CORAL GABLES, Fla. — Energy surged across the University of Miami campus Friday as students, faculty and fans gathered for a student-organized pep rally ahead of Monday’s national championship game.

Players were spotted boarding team buses decorated in orange and green, stopping along the way to sign autographs and take photos with fans. Among them was defensive standout Rueben Bain Jr., who drew cheers as he headed toward the buses.

Many who were in attendance said the moment felt historic.

“Been a Hurricanes fan since I was about 6 years old and I can remember going to the Orange Bowl and now living out a childhood dream of being able to attend a national championship,” said Sergio Madrigal. “It’s a great time.”

UM student Juan Carlos Castillo added “In my four years I’ve never seen it like this, so that should say something, not even with the basketball team, so this is, it’s been a good experience and I’ve never seen so many people on campus.”

Head coach Mario Cristobal addressed the crowd directly, urging fans to bring their energy to the game.

“What we need, what we need from you as we have this unbelievable historic opportunity, just bring it!” Cristobal said. “Bring that passion, bring that noise, and let’s show the entire country what is is to be a Miami Hurricane.”

University officials echoed the excitement, calling the team’s run a point of pride for both the school and the city.

“We get to show the world what Miami is all about, both the football team and the city,” said Coral Gables Police Chief Ed Hudak, who handles the security for the Hurricanes.

Fans were encouraged to wear orange for the championship game, while the Hurricanes will take the field in white uniforms.

Players are scheduled to depart campus later Friday for their team hotel ahead of Monday night’s matchup.
