LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Chargers are expected to hire former Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel as their next offensive coordinator, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Tuesday night.

McDaniel will replace Greg Roman, who was fired by the Chargers after another early playoff exit.

Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert has yet to win a playoff game in three attempts.

McDaniel, who was fired by the Dolphins on Jan. 8, interviewed for multiple head coaching and offensive coordinator opportunities, but in the end, the 42-year-old will likely get to work alongside Jim Harbaugh and Justin Herbert.

Herbert was selected one pick after Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa in the first round in 2020.

McDaniel, though he had responsibilities beyond the offense, helped revive Tagovailoa’s career, leading the Dolphins to back-to-back playoff appearances in his first two seasons.

In 2023, Tagovailoa led the league with 4,624 passing yards.

Miami’s offense declined sharply in 2024 – largely because Tagovailoa missed six and a half games due to separate injuries.

In McDaniel’s final season, he benched Tagovailoa in favor of seventh-round rookie Quinn Ewers.

Ewers started the team’s final three games with a 1-2 record.

McDaniel has ties to California. His wife, Katie McDaniel, is from the state, and he worked with the San Francisco 49ers as a run game coordinator before being promoted to offensive coordinator in 2021.

The Dolphins and Chargers will meet during the 2026 regular season at Hard Rock Stadium, but a date and time have not yet been announced.
