MIAMI — Inter Miami CF hosted eastern conference rivals New England Revolution Saturday night in a clash between the second and third placed clubs.
Inter Miami drew its third straight inside Nu Stadium 1-1, after a two game road win streak.
In the opening minutes of the match, Miami’s Luis Suarez tested New England and Team USA’s goal keeper Matt Turner with a right footed strike at the center of the net.
Moments later, star Lionel Messi struck the ball with his left foot to the top right corner of the goal, where Turner made a diving save.
After the hot start, the Herons cooled down and began controlling possession in order of finding the opening goal.
After 30 minutes, neither team were able to find a breakthrough, with Miami’s best chance of the game coming in the 17th minute from forward German Berterame, when he kicked it off his own leg for a goal kick.
On the brink of halftime, Messi got the ball right behind the six-yard box and tried hitting the bottom left corner, but Turner saved it.
The match went into the break 0-0 after a cagey first 45 minutes.
The second half started with Tadeo Allende subbing on for Inter Miami, replacing Noah Allen.
Five minutes after coming on, Allende scores for Miami but it’s ruled offside immediately by the assistant referee.
Only moments after Allende had his goal ruled offside, New England’s Carlos Gil broke the deadlock with a left-footed goal in the 56th minute, giving New England the lead. Forward Dor Turgeman got attributed with the assist.
Allende received Miami’s first yellow card of the game for a bad foul on Turgeman in the 59th minute.
Inter Miami generated an expected goals of 1.18 after 8 shots and 5 on target in 65 minutes, but couldn’t find the back of the net.
In the 68th minute, Miami’s David Ruiz received a yellow for a bad foul in a dangerous free kick area in New England’s final third. The free kick resulted in a goal kick for Miami.
After receiving his yellow, Ruiz was taken off for academy prospect Preston Plambeck, marking his senior debut with the club.
In the 75th minute, Inter Miami found the equalizing goal thanks to some throwback magic from Suarez, setting up Berterame for an easy tap-in goal.
Inter Miami turned it up a notch after scoring its first goal, with Messi coming close to scoring a second for the Herons.
After the full 90 minutes, the fourth official added a minimum of five minutes.
Messi takes a shot at goal in the 92nd minute, but Turner easily saved it.
The game ended 1-1, after a quiet night from Messi and Rodrigo De Paul.
