CARMEN BARAHONA

Man, 52, in torture death of 10-year-old adopted daughter appears in court

ALLAPATTAH, Fla. – Jorge Barahona, who faces the death penalty if convicted, appeared in Miami-Dade County court on Wednesday, as he begins to feel the weight of justice in the torture and death of his 10-year-old adopted daughter, Nubia. Nubia Barahona was found dead on Valentine's Day 2011 in her adoptive father's truck on the side of Interstate 95 in West Palm Beach. Carmen Barahona (right) has agreed to testify against her husband, Jorge Barahona (left), in the death of their adopted daughter. Jorge Barahona’s wife, Carmen Barahona, recently pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse charges. Jorge Barahona is facing eight counts of child abuse, seven counts of child neglect with no great bodily harm, child neglect with great bodily harm, child abuse with great bodily harm, attempted first-degree murder, dead human body abuse and first-degree murder.

Putney’s Perspective: ‘Justice delayed’ in torture death of 10-year-old Nubia Barahona is ‘justice denied’

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – Local 10 News Senior Political Reporter Michael Putney is critical of State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle’s handling of the case in the 2011 torture death of 10-year-old Nubia Barahona in Miami-Dade. The cases against Nubia’s adoptive parents, Carmen Barahona, 69, and Jorge Barahona, 52, continued while her twin brother, Victor, who survived the abuse waited for justice. After Carmen Barahona pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse charges on Friday, Fernandez Rundle released a statement saying her sentencing will be deferred until she testifies against Jorge Barahona, who faces the death penalty if convicted.

Carmen Barahona pleads guilty, agrees to testify against husband in death of adopted daughter

MIAMI – A mother accused of starving, torturing and killing her adopted daughter pleaded guilty Friday and has agreed to testify against her husband. Under the terms of the plea deal, Carmen Barahona, 69, will be spared a death sentence and instead spend the rest of her life in prison. Carmen Barahona (right) has agreed to testify against her husband, Jorge Barahona (left), in the death of their adopted daughter. Jorge Barahona, 52, faces trial in April. “My prosecution team remains vigilant in obtaining justice against Jorge Barahona for the horrific acts he is responsible for against these innocent children,” Fernandez Rundle said.
