NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – A gas leak in North Miami Beach shut down a major roadway Friday morning. The gas leak was reported around 6 a.m. in the area of Northeast 143rd Street and Biscayne Boulevard. North Miami Beach police said northbound and southbound lanes on Biscayne Boulevard were shut down from Northeast 143rd Street to 146th Street. Southbound lanes reopened around 9 a.m.Police said the roadway was expected to remain closed for several hours as crews evaluated the situation. Authorities have not yet said what caused the gas leak.

WILTON MANORS, Fla. – A horrific crash early Sunday morning in Wilton Manors left an SUV unrecognizable on impact, shredding the SUV to pieces. Only one person, the driver, was in the Ford Expedition and that person’s condition has not been released. Wilton Manors police believe the driver was speeding southbound on Dixie Highway when approaching the Five Points intersection at Wilton Drive and NE 26th Street. The day has finally come: Miami-Dade County might change the name of Dixie Highway, which is gross, racist, and a shamefully symbolic reminder of the state's slaveholding past. Last week, county Commissioner Dennis Moss announced he intends to introduce legislation that would rename the portion of Dixie Highway that runs through Miami-Dade. Sosa called it an "education" because she was unfamiliar with the racist history of the word "Dixie." After the outbreak of the Civil War, the song "Dixie" became the de facto anthem of the Confederacy. So Miami-Dade Commissioner Moss said the time has come to rename Dixie Highway.

AVENTURA, Fla. - A driver is dead after a Brightline train collided with an SUV in Aventura on Friday. The crash occurred at Dixie Highway and Ives Dairy Road, just across from the Aventura Mall. Police said the female driver of the Mercedes-Benz SUV died in the crash. It's not known exactly where the collision took place and how far the vehicle was pushed down the railroad tracks. A portion of Dixie Highway in the Aventura area was closed as authorities investigated the fatal crash.

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. - A person was struck and killed by an Amtrak train Thursday afternoon in Pompano Beach. The crash occurred on the railroad tracks near Sample Road and Dixie Highway, just west of Interstate 95. According to the Broward Sheriff's Office, the death does not appear to be suspicious.
