Miami Gardens reports sharp drop in homicides and crime
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The Miami Gardens Police Department released end-of-year statistics that show the city saw a significant decrease in crime and homicides in 2020. Homicides were down 33% from the previous year, the city says, and Part 1 crimes were down 31%. Part 1 crimes are “overall crimes except hate crimes, larceny theft, simple assault, intimidation and vandalism/destruction of property,” a city spokeswoman said. The official accreditation is scheduled for February 2021,” the city said. The department will be re-evaluated every three years to retain the designation, officials say.
Officer faces charges for firing service weapon outside while drunk in Miami Gardens
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. Miami Gardens Police Department officers recently responded to the home of a Miami-Dade County correctional officer after a gunshot detection system went off. I shot a couple of times here in the bushes, White said, according to the officers report, adding White was in possession of a Glock 19, his service weapon. The Miami-Dade Corrections & Rehabilitation Departments Internal Affairs Unit and the Miami Gardens Police Department are investigating White, according to Juan Diasgranados, a Miami-Dade County spokesman. Records show officers arrested White on May 21 and prosecutors filed the case on June 8. White is facing one count of using a firearm while under the influence and one count of discharging a firearm while in public.

Charges dropped against man in rough arrest that resulted in firing of 2 Miami Gardens officers
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. Two men were fired from the Miami Gardens Police Department after several videos captured them arresting and beating a man earlier this year. Thursday, the victim seen in the videos officially had the charges against him dropped. That man, Miguel McKay, said losing their jobs isnt enough. Miguels friend was the man initially taken into custody, and videos captured Miguel on the ground with Officers Martel and Castano above. Miami Gardens Police Chief Delma Noel Pratt saying the officers actions were egregious, and that the matter is currently still an open active criminal investigation with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE).
Person hospitalized after dirt bike crashes into vehicle, police say
MIAMI GARDENS – A driver of a dirt bike is in critical condition after being airlifted to a hospital following an accident with a vehicle, according to the Miami Gardens Police Department. Police said the accident happened along the 600 block of Northwest 199th Street. The investigation is ongoing.
Man holds baby, mother hostage in Miami Gardens, police say
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - A man was holding a mother and a baby hostage Friday at a home in Miami Gardens, police said. Miami Gardens Police Department officers responded to the 3-bedroom home at 3920 NW 174 St., near Myrtle Grove Elementary School. Officers arrested the man about 3:10 p.m. According to Officer Carlos R.
