As part of the program, 120 students in the 11th grade will learn 13 different trades. They will later choose one trade for a potential career path.

The students in the pre-apprenticeship program will also earn a salary with benefits after graduation.

The pilot program will be offered at Coral Gables Senior High School, Miami Edison High School, Homestead High School and Miami Carol City Senior High School.

Students enrolled at the high schools can ask their school administrators to sign up.

"Depending on how well the pilot program goes, the pre-apprenticeship will become available to all high schools in Miami-Dade," said Carmen Morris, a spokeswoman for Commissioner Xavier L. Suarez.

The pre-apprenticeship program will begin this school year, which starts on Monday.
