To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the King's death, two rival Elvis stage shows will compete for attention Saturday night in Fort Lauderdale.

In one, Elvis comes to life at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Using the latest technology, Elvis performs live via video, backed by a live band, singers and an orchestra. This is the only Elvis production that is produced and endorsed by Graceland.

The show, which ranges in price from $45 to $145, begins at 8 p.m.

In the rival performance, Chris MacDonald's Memories of Elvis at the Parker Playhouse recreates the legendary sound of the King. MacDonald is the only tribute artist hired to perform at Graceland's Heartbreak Hotel. It is his only South Florida appearance this summer.

Tommy Lee Jones, Gary Sinise, John Malkovich, James Belushi, Dennis Quaid, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Bruce Willis have all starred in various versions of the play, which was first performed in 1980.

"True West" is a New City Players production. It runs through Aug. 27 at the Vanguard Sanctuary for the Arts.
