'Roseanne' returns to ABC

8-episode reboot featuring original cast scheduled to air next year

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – "Roseanne" is returning to ABC.

The Roseanne Barr-led sitcom, which aired for nine seasons from 1988 to 1997, will return to ABC for an eight-episode reboot, the network announced Tuesday.

John Goodman, Sara Gilbert, Laurie Metcalf, Michael Fishman and Lecy Goranson will reprise their roles as Barr's family. Sarah Chalke, who played Barr's oldest daughter in later seasons, will also appear in another role.

"The Conners' joys and struggles are as relevant -- and hilarious -- today as they were then, and there's really no one better to comment on our modern America than Roseanne," Channing Dungey, president of ABC Entertainment, said Tuesday.

"Roseanne" was ranked No. 32 on TV Guide's 50 greatest TV shows of all time.

The reboot is scheduled to air next year.
