Miami-Dade County spokeswoman Jennifer Messemer-Skold said an air release valve broke off a 36-inch sewer line at Biscayne Boulevard and Northeast 168th Street, causing about 5,800 gallons of wastewater to spill into the waterway.
County officials have already repaired the break and posted signs around the affected areas.
The Florida Department of Health is testing the water, but the advisory will remain in effect until two consecutive days of clear testing occur.
