Coconut Creek shooter leaves 2 dead, 2 injured, including officer, police say

Police chief: Jason Roseman fired shotgun, injuring Officer Andrew Renna

COCONUT CREEK, Fla. – The accused shooter who left two people dead and two injured -- including a police officer -- Saturday morning in Coconut Creek has a history of domestic violence, records show.

Coconut Creek Police Department Chief Albert Arenal said the shooter, whom detectives identified as Jason Roseman, surrendered after the shooting.

The 44-year-old suspect is accused of firing a shotgun at Officer Andrew Renna, who has been with the department for more than four years.  He was responding to a 7:05 a.m. 911 call about a stabbing

"His vehicle immediately took rounds," Arenal said, adding that although the 30-year-old officer sped away from the shooter as quickly as he could, he was wounded as the bullets pierced through the passenger door and the passenger window.

When detectives arrived, they found a crime scene that involved three homes along Northwest 57th Drive between Northwest 42nd and 43rd Way in the city's Coral Point subdivision. Officers said it was a difficult crime scene that required the cooperation of other law enforcement agencies.

Authorities are investigating a shooting in Coconut Creek that left two dead and three injured — including a police officer.

"When I looked outside I just saw a whole bunch of cop cars and SWAT teams and everything," Markens Augustin said, adding that he woke up to mayhem in his neighborhood.

It was an eerie anniversary for Roseman, who was born in Hickory, North Carolina.

Broward County court records show the Coconut Creek Police Department arrested Roseman two years ago, Aug. 24, 2017, for domestic battery by strangulation, touch or strike battery and aggravated assault.

On Saturday afternoon, detectives were still working to piece the puzzle.

In the home where Northwest 42nd Way and Northwest 57th Drive meet, officers reported finding a woman's body, a dead pit bull, ammunition and what appeared to be an improvised explosive device. The SWAT team later identified it as a prop.

A woman was dead in the neighboring home's driveway and a man was injured at a nearby home.

Arenal said the man who was found wounded is in extremely critical condition, and Renna is in stable condition. They are both at Broward Health North's intensive care unit. Renna's right lung was punctured.

"We feel very lucky about his condition," Arenal said about the police officer, adding that his survival was largely due to the quick action of police officers and the Margate Coconut Creek Fire Rescue personnel.

A tearful woman who was talking to detectives outside of the crime scene collapsed in shock on Saturday afternoon at the crime scene, saying "Oh my God!" She later headed to Broward Health North.
