The storm dumped 18 inches of rain on Broward County.
It came in from the west, across Alligator Alley, flooding homes, farms and ranches in Hollywood, Davie, Weston and Pembroke Pines.
Customers in low-lying areas that are often heavily flooded had to deal with power outages for nearly three days while FPL crews worked to restore power.
Despite being only a Category 1 hurricane, Irene is blamed for eight deaths across Florida. The storm caused an estimated $800 million in damage in the state.
It is still considered a 100 year storm, a statistical event that has a 1 percent chance of occurring each year.
