PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – Dr. Sara Rivero-Conil, a psychologist with Miami Children's Hospital, came to the Local 10 studios Monday to participate in the weekly medical Web chat.
"I think this is a great opportunity to reach out to parents and help them understand some key issues kids are facing these days," said Rivero-Conil.

Rivero-Conil said anxiety is common among kids at the start of the school year.
"Balancing extracurricular activities, family events and school can be overwhelming," said Rivero-Conil. "It's important to keep a keen eye on how your child is behaving, including sleeping and eating habits, to see if they are stressed."
Rivero-Conil said it's important for parents to talk to their kids and get their input about their activity load.
Bullying is also a common concern.
"As a parent, key indicators to look out for include changes in school performance, moodiness, lack of desire to take part in activities and a disheveled look," said Rivero-Conil.
Rivero-Conil also addressed a common parental problem: discipline.
"I was conversing in the Web chat with a mom whose 5-year-old throws a lot of tantrums when asked to do things he doesn't want to do," she said. "Discipline is not one size fits all. You have to tailor your approach to come to one that is effective for that child."
