Thanksgiving Killing Suspect 's Parents Say They're Not Responsible

Man Accused Of Killing 5 At Thanksgiving Celebration

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The parents of a South Florida man accused of killing several family members on Thanksgiving in 2009 said they are not responsible for their son's actions.

Paul Michael Merhige is accused of opening fire during a family gathering at a Jupiter home, fatally shooting his sisters, twins Lisa Knight and Carla Merhige, his 6-year-old cousin, Makayla Sitton, and his 79-year-old aunt.

Muriel and Jim Sitton filed lawsuits against Paul Merhige's parents last month, claiming they knew their son was planning to show up uninvited to Thanksgiving dinner and possibly hurt someone.

His parents deny the allegations.

Merhige was later found hiding out in the Florida Keys. He is scheduled to go on trial in January. His attorneys plan to argue he was insane at the time of the killings.
