POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – A man died after a car crashed into at least two gas pumps at a service station in Pompano Beach early Thursday.
The Broward Sheriff's Office said a Ford Mustang was going south on Federal Highway about 2:20 a.m. when it crashed into gas pumps at an Exxon station at 329 N. Federal Highway.
"His body flew outside, and he wasn't wearing a seat belt," said gas station owner Poonam Wadhwa.
BSO said the driver, Julius Marcel Sterling Haywood, 26, of Pompano Beach, died at the scene of the crash.
No fire broke out, and the gas station was closed at the time, police said.
The station was open for business Thursday.
"I couldn't believe it," Wadhwa said. "I have never in my life seen it. It wasn't a car; it was metal crushed."
Detectives are using a surveillance video from the gas station as they work to determine what caused the car to crash. There were no witnesses, police said.
