Publix store features electric car-charging station

Electric car drivers can charge cars while they shop

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Complaining about gas prices isn't going to change what drivers pay at the pump, but buying an electric car will.

Some wonder how mainstream that type of vehicle can become. Well, Publix seems to believe in the concept.

"We really saw a growing market for electric vehicles," said Media Relations Manager Kim Jaeger.

She said that's why the store in Fort Lauderdale on Andrews Avenue and Southeast Sixth Street is the first in Florida to offer an electric car charging station.

"You just pull up, plug in and then go shopping.  It's simple, quick and efficient," said Jaeger.

She feels it could be the start of something big.

"We decided, let's test this. Let's see how our customers respond," she sad.

In the way, however, is the latest news concerning the Chevy Volt after the car's battery burst into flames during a crash test.  Maybe it's just a bump in the ultimate road to success.  At the very least, the new charging station will double as a measuring stick for the popularity of plug-in cars.

The usage is available now and free for shoppers.
