FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Broward County's historic Shippey House has a new address.
Sunday, utility crews drove the 98-year-old home about a quarter of a mile down Broward Boulevard to a new lot in Himmarshee Village. The total ride took several hours due to power lines and utility poles along the way.
Built in 1914, the Shippey House is named after Broward County's second judge, Fred Shippey. It has been sitting on a metal platform for the past six years, under an active demolition permit. An anonymous $50,000 donation saved the house from being destroyed.
"The wrecking ball was just basically 48 hours away," said Alysa Plummer, President of Save Shippey House. "Fortunately the owner really stepped up along with us over time and worked with us to save the house."
The Shippey House will now be preserved and restored to how it looked back in 1914. The City of Fort Lauderdale donated the new plot of land in Himmarshee Village.
