SOUTHWEST RANCHES, Fla. – A small plane made an emergency landing Sunday morning in the middle of a major road in western Broward County.
Police said the pilot landed his single-engine Cessna on US-27 near Griffin Road after a mechanical problem.
The pilot is a veteran Miami-Dade firefighter paramedic named Pablo Terreros, according to a department spokesperson.
Terreros, still in a shirt from work, said he was off duty.
Shortly after 8 am, Terreros told Local 10 he was heading from Opa-locka airport to Sebring, Fla.
Terreros said oil was leaking from the engine and he was forced to put the plane down.
The plane missed the few drivers on the road and landed successfully.
Officials said Terreros, the only person onboard the plane, was not injured.
US-27 northbound was closed for several hours, but has since reopened.
As crews moved the plane to the side of the road to dismantle its wings for ground transport, drivers slowed to take a look.
"I don't know what to think. It's something different to see that on the highway," one driver said.
The incident is now under investigation.
