FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Broward County Commission approved a regional 911 system on Tuesday, in a 5-4 vote.
The new system will take emergency calls from nearly every city in the county, and dispatch the appropriate resources. The cities of Coral Springs and Plantation have opted out of the consolidated system.

The need for a regional 911 system was brought to light after calls were released where dispatchers were unable to determine the location of a caller driving through multiple Broward County cities.
The project has an estimated price tag of $43 Million. Of that money, $18.7 Million will come from the BSO budget, the other $20.7 Million come from homeowner property taxes.
