Police arrest suspect accused of shooting, killing 36-year-old man
MIAMI – Police arrest a suspect accused of fatally shooting a 36-year-old man who was sitting on a bus bench Wednesday evening.
Detectives said 21-year-old Zackary Joshua McGriff shot Juan Augustine Lorenzo-Gonzalez about 5:30 p.m. at the intersection of Northwest 36th Street and 14th Avenue.
Lorenzo-Gonzalez was sitting at the eastbound bus stop when police said McGriff walked over to him and shot him in the head. Lorenzo-Gonzalez tried crossing to the other side of 36th Street, but collapsed.
Lorenzo-Gonzalez, who lived with his mother nearby, was waiting for his brother to pick him up when he was shot.
"I heard the shot and like everybody else, I came down to see what happened," said Rafael Duran, Lorenzo-Gonzalez's friend. "He don't bother nobody."
At 4:50 p.m. Thursday, police said McGriff's mother provided Miami homicide detectives with the handgun used in the shooting. According to his mother, McGriff gave her the handgun, then left the home after saying he was going to Jackson Memorial Hospital to commit himself.
McGriff was apprehended at JHM by the Miami-Dade Police Department, according to investigators, on an unrelated charge. McGriff's clothing matched the description given by an eyewitness, said police.
"He was quite casual and quite brazen when he walked up to this man and just shot him," said Miami police spokesperson Kenia Reyes.
McGriff was charged with first-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and carrying a concealed firearm.
Investigators questioned people in the area, including those on board the bus and at nearby businesses, where detectives found more surveillance video to examine, along with the images shot from the bus.
"There should be cameras everywhere on every corner," said witness Ariel Gomez.
So far, however, there is no word on a motive.
