Commissioners vote to make Alton Road project more 'pedestrian-friendly'

Plan will include medians, wider sidewalks

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – Miami Beach City Commissioners unanimously approved "Alternative 3," one of three plans to amend the Florida Department of Transportation's Alton Road reconstruction project.

The plan, spearheaded by Florida Rep. David Richardson and Gwen Margolis, would add medians and wider sidewalks to the state road, which is a main thoroughfare on Miami Beach.

The Alton Road reconstruction project, which aims to curb flooding by modernizing an aging drainage system and add pumping stations, has been criticized by some residents who believed the final product was not pedestrian-friendly enough.

The Alton Road flyover is expected to be closed for 1 month.
