LAUDERDALE LAKES, Fla. – The stepfather of an 18-year-old man found murdered returned to the last place he saw the teenager alive.
Marlon Channer found the body of Steven Rutty, his stepson, when he returned to their home in the 3700 block of Northwest 27th Street on Monday afternoon.
"I came home from work and went inside and saw him laying down by the bathroom," Channer said Tuesday. "I thought I was in a dream or something, in disbelief."
Channer, who raised Rutty since he was a toddler, said he found his stepson shot execution style.
"I called my wife right away and I didn't get her. Then I called 911," he said.
Rutty's mother collapsed after arriving home.
"Very bad. She's fainted a couple times," said Richard Simpson, Rutty's uncle.
Simpson said he worried about Rutty when the teenager came home at 4 a.m. Monday.
"I said, 'What happened to you?' He said, 'Nothing'. I said, 'You sure?' He said, 'Nothing', but he was disturbed in his mind like something was trouble in his mind," said Simpson.
"Did you think he was in trouble?" asked Local 10 Tamika Bickham.
"Basically, this happened, I would say yeah," answered Simpson.
Simpson believes Rutty likely knew his killer
"There's no broken entry. We have three strong doors here," said Simpson.
"It's wrong what they did. He's a kid. Nobody should take another person's life, regardless of who you are, it doesn't matter," added Channer.
Rutty was the youngest of three boys.
