Police searching for carjacker who crashed Corvette

Car crashed into northwest Miami-Dade home; No injuries reported

MIAMI – Police are searching for a carjacker who stole a Chevrolet Corvette, crashed it into a northwest Miami-Dade home, and ran away.

Opa-locka police received a call about a carjacking about 10 p.m. Tuesday in the 13300 block of Aswan Road. Miami police later spotted the car in their jurisdiction, and started pursuing it.

The driver lost control of the car near Northwest 17th Avenue and 74th Street, then went flying through the air and crashed into a home. The driver was able to escape, and no injuries were reported.

"I thought it was a sinkhole and that the house was coming down," said Richard Campbell, who was inside the home watching television when the crash happened. "I rushed out here and saw the damage. I looked out here and saw the car was smoking."

Campbell said the bank foreclosed the home recently and that the majority of his belongings were in boxes. He planned to stay there until he found a new place to live.

"I do believe in a supernatural spirit and I do believe that's what saved me," he added.

Many in the neighborhood were shocked by all of the late night activity.

"I saw the car circling around, and we suspected that the driver was operating like that was not his car," said Tony Samuels, who has lived in the neighborhood for eight years.

Police do not have a description of the carjacker, but if you know anything about the events leading up to this crash, call Miami-Dade Crimestoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
