Gabrielle downgraded to depression

System may degenerate to remnant low late Thursday

MIAMI – The National Hurricane Center downgraded Gabrielle to a tropical depression Thursday morning.

At 11 a.m., Gabrielle was 80 miles south-southeast of Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, with maximum sustained winds of 35 mph. It was moving northwest at 9 mph.

Forecasters said Gabrielle would continue moving northwest during the next 24 hours. It was expected to degenerate to a remnant low late Thursday or early Friday as it moved above the Dominican Republic.

Tropical storm warnings for Puerto Rico were cancelled. A tropical storm watch was issued for the Dominican Republic from Cabo Engano to Cabo Frances Viejo.

The storm was expected to bring 2 to 4 inches of rain to Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
