Suspect shot when officers respond to reports of burglary

MIAMI – A police officer shot a burglary suspect who threatened them with a pickaxe late Monday, according to Miami-Dade police.

Police responded to calls of a burglary at 4280 SW 10th Street about 9:25 p.m. According to police spokesman Det. Roy Rutland, the responding officer was then confronted by the armed suspect.

When the man refused to drop his pickaxe, the officer shot the man, said Rutland.

"I heard like six gunshots," said Henry Guerra. "It was crazy. Immediately the helicopters, the fire rescue, 50 police officers."

The suspect was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he was in serious but stable condition as of early Tuesday morning. The officer wasn't hurt.

One neighbor claimed she knew the suspect.

"He lives in the back house with his mom," said Doris Quinn.
