Broward man dies after plane crashes into Lake Okeechobee

PAHOKEE, Fla. – A man from Margate died Saturday morning after a plane crashed into Lake Okeechobee, according to Palm Beach County Fire Rescue.

A citizen called the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office stating that there was an overturned boat in Lake Okeechobee 2 miles off shore.

A PBSO helicopter discovered the wreckage was an aircraft that was upside down.

Deputies said the aircraft is a Kit plane, listed as a Model S-12E.

The pilot, 69-year-old Bruce Lowerre, was discovered strapped in his seat. Lowerre was taken to the Medical Examiner's Office to determine his cause of death, deputies said.

Captain Albert Borroto said Lowerre was found by divers.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
