BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – A woman was taken into custody Saturday after authorities say she led a deputy on a short chase and crashed into another vehicle in Broward County.
The incident happened Saturday while a deputy was conducting a traffic stop in the 1700 block of West Oakland Park Boulevard.
The Broward Sheriff's Office said the deputy pulled over a Mazda driven by Maryfe Del Pilar Niño, 31, with her boyfriend riding in the passenger seat.
During the course of the traffic stop, the deputy received information that Niño had active felony warrants for escape, resisting arrest with violence, battery on a law enforcement officer, various narcotics charges and additional resisting arrest charges, according to BSO.
The deputy ordered Niño out of the Mazda and she got out of the car. Against the deputy's orders, authorities said she got back into the car and the deputy tried to extract her from the vehicle.
Witnessing this, deputies said Niño's boyfriend exited the Mazda and complied with the deputy's order to stay put. Niño started the car and accelerated, taking off, with the deputy still restraining her left arm.
The deputy fell from the accelerating car, uninjured, and pursued Niño westbound on Oakland Park Boulevard, then north on Northwest 31st Avenue. That's when deputies said Niño ran a red light and struck an SUV at Commercial Boulevard.
Deputies said the driver of the SUV was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Niño was taken into custody and will face additional felony charges. Deputies said Niño's boyfriend is not facing any charges at this time and is being considered a witness.
