Obama places calls to congressional leaders

Obama placed separate calls to Senate Majority Leader Reid, Senate Minority Leader McConnell, Speaker Boehner and Democratic Leader Pelosi Monday night to make clear that Congress has two jobs to do: pay the bills on time and pass a budget on time. Should those responsibilities not be carried out, it would be harmful to our economy, small businesses and middle class families across the country.

Obama also urged for a vote tonight to keep government open and to avoid a shutdown.

Obama reiterated that he will continue to oppose any politically motivated attempts to defund or delay the Affordable Care Act. He also reminded Congress that he will not negotiate on the debt limit. Congress must pay bills already incurred to avoid a blow to our economy.

Obama thanked Democratic leaders for their effort to pass a bill to fund government on current levels.

Obama will continue to work to pass a budget to protect the investments needed to grow the economy, create good jobs and build a better bargain for middle class.
