Report: Marlins under federal investigation

Team allegedly investigated for wage violations

LOS ANGELES ā€“ According to a report, the Miami Marlins are under federal investigation for federal wage law violations.

The labor website FairWarning says that the Marlins, along with the San Francisco Giants, are being targeted "amid wider concern about questionable pay practices throughout professional baseball."

A spokesman with the U.S. Department of Labor confirmed the investigations to FairWarning, but would not give details.

When contacted by the website, a Marlins spokesman said the club does not believe "that any of the Marlins' current labor practices are improper... We can confirm that the Marlins have been and will continue to cooperate fully with the Department of Labor."

The investigation into the Giants was focused on the improper use of unpaid interns, which has recently become a concern in many industries in the U.S.

The Marlins hosted a internship fair on Wednesday and the Miami New Times listed 18 different departments in which the team was looking for interns.

Labor Department guidelines state that unpaid internships are proper only when designed for the education of the interns, and not to benefit the employer or displace regular workers.
