Former ME weighs in on Diplomat Hotel death

Fall kills Piotr Kulesza

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – A former Broward County medical examiner weighs in on the death of a Northwestern University medical professor who plunged 23 stories at the Westin Diplomat Hotel on Sunday.

Police don't suspect foul play in the death of 46-year-old Piotr Kulesza, an associate professor of pathology at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and physician at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

"Can be suicide, can be accident, can be homicide, or can be a natural disease which precipitated the death," said former Broward medical examiner Dr. Joshua Perper. "The pathological findings are going to explain something about the cause of death and something about the mechanism of death."

Perper said he would look into Kulesza's history.

"Who is the person? What are his problem [sic]?" said Perper. "Are there any professional incidents that might have affected his decision? Does he have a history of being threatened by anybody? Does he have a history of suicidal attempts?"
