MIAMI – A new program at the Dave & Mary Alper Jewish Community Center aims to put kids at risk of obesity on the right track with diet and exercise.
The JCC's "Team Fit for Children" program began Monday. It targets children ages 8 through 12 who have a high body mass index (BMI).

"The younger the better. If you have a problem when they're eight and you don't address it till they're thirteen, it's only a larger issue at that point," said director Meg McCarthy.
"You learn about how much to serve yourself when you eat and you learn how to exercise more," added Galia Dircie.
Classes meet three times a week. Participants receive nutritional counseling and try different sports.
The program requires children be screened before registering. Click here to learn how to sign up.
