Bess stopped playing football with two games left in the season, but it was an arrest report from last March that has stirred up the NFL.
Bess' family committed him to a mental hospital against his will after an apparent breakdown at his then-Cooper City home during which BSO deputies found him incoherently yelling about weed, guns, and scoring touchdowns.
On Monday, Dolphins' spokesman Harvey Green was quiet about Bess, but questions abound about whether the Dolphins should have notified the Cleveland Browns of the Bess breakdown before his May trade to that team.
"He's not a member of our team, so I'm not really authorized to say anything," Greene said.
What may be most shocking about this is that when Bess played with the Dolphins, he was a great success story who did extensive work in the community.
He visited schools across Broward County, spreading a positive message taken from his own tough upbringing.
