Sheriff's Capt. Angelo Nieves says firefighters "made valiant efforts" to save the 34-year-old deputy, who died a short time later at Orlando Regional Medical Center.

Officials say the deputy attempted to question a suspect, who shot the deputy. It was not clear whether there was an altercation before the shooting. Officials say the suspect ran away and was later found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

A woman who was with the suspect was being questioned by investigators.

The deputy's name has not been released, but Sheriff Jerry L. Demings, who is returning to Orlando from a business trip, asked for prayers for the deputy's wife and three small children.

"We now have to endure the tragedy with the family to try to understand this, which is unbearable and really not understandable, and we hope the community understands the sacrifice this family has undertaken," Nieves said.
