Antonio Cardoza recovering after police-involved shooting

Police say suspect barricaded inside home threatened to shoot officers

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – One man is recovering in the hospital after barricading himself in a home, leading to a police-involved shooting Sunday morning.

Antonino Cardoza, 25, is in stable condition at Jackson Memorial Hospital after being shot in the chest by police.

Miami-Dade police were called to a home at 1320 NE 204th St., where family members told police that Cardoza was in the house, armed and acting irrational.

Police said when officers attempted to make contact with Cardoza, they heard windows being smashed and Cardoza began threatening to shoot the officers if they came closer.

Hostage negotiators were called to the home, but when negotiators attempted to communicate with Cardoza, shots were fired and he was seen fleeing to the second story, police said.

Police entered the home after hours of negotiating and Cardoza was taken into custody without incident.

Once in custody, Cardoza was found to have a gunshot wound. He was airlifted to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.

Police continue to investigate this shooting.

No officers were injured in the shooting.
