10 hurt in rollover crash on Sawgrass Expressway

FHP: Van's tire appears to have blown out

SUNRISE, Fla. – Ten people were injured Thursday morning after a van overturned in the northbound lanes of the Sawgrass Expressway.

The van was the only vehicle involved in the crash near Pat Salerno Drive about 8:15 a.m.

All 10 people had to be extricated from the overturned van.

Four people were taken to Broward Health Medical Center in critical condition. The six remaining victims were taken to other hospitals. FHP said their ages ranged from 20 to 41.

The passenger riding in the front seat, identified as 25-year-old Eric Aguilar, lost his hand in the crash.

Debris and bloody clothes were scattered about the crash scene.

Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Roger Reyes said it appeared a rear tire blew out, causing the crash.

Reyes said most, if not everyone, in the van were not wearing seat belts.

"That vehicle is a cargo van," Reyes said. "It does not have seats for 10 individuals."

The driver of the van, identified by FHP as 34-year-old Paschal Morales, faces careless driving and no driver's license charges.

Several lanes of traffic were shut down during the investigation.
