POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – Detectives with the Broward Sheriff's Office believe an early-morning shooting and crash may have been the product of mistaken identity.
Police said two men with handkerchiefs concealing their faces approached a couple in the 400 block of Northeast 29th Street in Pompano Beach around 5 a.m. Sunday. After a brief conversation, one of the handkerchief-wearing men fired shots.
While neither of the victims nor their car was shot, the suspects fled, crashing a few minutes later on Interstate 96, officials said.
"The subject lost control, ran off the road, hit the road, hit the tree," said Mark Wysocky, with Florida Highway Patrol.
Officials said the impact crumpled the car's roof and driver's side door.
One of the men, identified as 23-year-old Ivan Alexander Parra, died on the scene, the other was taken to Broward Health north, where he is in critical condition.
Detectives with BSO said they believe the gunman may have thought one of the victims was someone else.
Officials said the gunman will be charged with aggravated assault with a firearm.
