1 dead after car slams into tree, catches fire in Coral Springs

Witnesses say Cadillac speeding at time of crash

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – A driver was killed when a car crashed into a tree and caught fire Tuesday night.

The crash occurred in the 3000 block of Coral Springs Drive, just south of Sample Road, shortly after 10 p.m.

Lt. Brad McKeone said witnesses told police they observed the four-door Cadillac speeding when it struck the tree.

Cellphone video captured the aftermath as firefighters worked to extinguish the flames.

"I heard the squealing of the tires and then I heard the crash right afterwards," William Crowther, who recorded the video, told Local 10.

Crowther, who used to be a paramedic, said he tried to open the door and reach the driver inside.

"I couldn't even see him," Crowther said.

Other neighbors tried to put out the fire themselves.

McKeone said the driver, identified as Javon Marquis, 30, was the only person in the car. He died at the scene.
