MIRAMAR, Fla. – The family of an eighth-grade boy has filed a lawsuit after he fractured three vertebrae in his neck while being attacked by another student.
The incident happened April 28 at New Renaissance Middle School in Miramar.
According to the Law Offices of Adam Baron, Taishawn Yee was picked up and thrown to the floor by another student in the hallway.
The incident started in the last period, when the teacher gave the students a free period since they had been taking the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test earlier in the day. Several boys started horse-playing, attempting to lift each other up.
Yee allegedly did not allow his attacker to pick him up, so the student decided to sneak up from behind him in the hallway after class.
Yee was taken by ambulance to Memorial West and transferred to Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital, where he was admitted for neck surgery and had to have screws inserted.
The other student was disciplined with a 10-day suspension and a recommendation of expulsion, due to the severity of the incident.
