Plastic flamingos raising awareness stolen from Davie yards

DAVIE, Fla. ā€“ A resident in Davie says plastic flamingos put up in her Ivanhoe community are being stolen from their yards.

The flamingos were the centerpiece of an effort by the Divas for a Cure. Young pageant queens have been hard at work over the last three months, putting them in the front yards of their friends, neighbors and cancer survivors to raise money for Pembroke Pines Relay for Life.

Francine Novo said she and the group of females, ages 4 to 23, are trying to raise $5,500 in donations.

Novo said some of the younger girls can't understand why someone would want to steal their flamingos.

"It's very important to us, it's a big part of our lives," said Emma Gillian.

The group has raised $700 so far, but to replace the flamingos they said it will cost them about $150.

Novo said about 15 to 20 flamingos were stolen, and she has filed a police report. She hopes the community will help them find out who took the flamingos.
