School supply giveaway held in Miami

More than 1,000 book bags full of supplies to be given away

MIAMI – Hundreds of families attended a school supply giveaway Saturday at Juan Pablo Duarte Park in Miami.

More than 1,000 book bags full of school supplies were available for free at the 5th Annual Back to School Supply Giveaway.

"Our goal was to help [students] be prepared for the first day of school," organizer Jordana Zarut told Local 10 News.

Zarut is the president of the Young Dreams Community Outreach. Her organization teamed up with Commission Chairman Wilfredo "Willy" Gort to fundraise. Gort and Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado were in attendance at the event.

Several other vendors also donated time and products to the event. In addition to the supply giveaway, families were also offered free food and the opportunity for kids to get free haircuts before the school year begins later this month.

"We know there are a lot of kids in need in this community," Zarut said. "We like to reach out to them and because they're in need they come out to the event to get supplies."
